Dear Customers,

February finds us very busy getting ready for the coming racing season.  Just about all of our race customers are busy now. Many are preparing engines to go to Florida for Speed Week.

By the time you read this I will have celebrated another birthday. Ground Hogs Rule!! We will be in Sarasota Feb 1 – 3rd visiting my mother and celebrating my birthday. We will be back in the shop Feb 4th.

There doesn’t seem to be such a furor over crate motors this year. They are still around in increasing numbers. At all levels there are people who have found a way around the factory seals and cheat these motors up. Since these motors are “factory sealed” tech on them is usually minimal. Once again, the money rules!

Drag strips will be opening near the end of this month and their regular season will start in March. Oval tracks will start opening in early April. Be ready!

New lobe designs

We have a new addition to our 28 degree major intensity XTLS series. It is a 246/.323 lift profile. It is available now.

I spent some time with my consultant last month. The result was a new group of mechanical profiles with 22 degrees of major intensity! They are all .324 lift.  We have completed designs for 238, 242, & 246 degree duration @.050. We will have one master made for testing before we do any others.

We have had quite a few calls for .420 lift hydraulic cams recently so we have created designs for 232 to 242 duration @.050 with .280 lobe lift in 2 degree increments. They have 40 degrees of hydraulic intensity. We will have several masters made now and the rest as needed. We have some larger duration .280 lift profiles in our Taylor series.

On the tractor pulling front we have new profiles for 1 inch diameter lifters in 194 duration @.050 with .294 lift and a 200 degree duration @.050 with .300 lift. These profiles will offer great lugging power.

For Drag racers we have 2 new exhaust profiles with 306 and 312 duration @.050 and .477 lift. They feature constant velocity ramps for great stability at high rpm and they will be easy on the valve train.

Masters should be ready in a couple of weeks.

POR-15 available from Camcraft

Those of you involved in the restoration of older cars are undoubtedly aware of POR-15 products. They make an amazing rust preventative paint that goes on right over rust and provides an extremely hard, flexible coating that actually cures harder in the presence of moisture. It is amazing. There are also related restoration products to complement it like gas tank sealer, top coat paints, engine paints, trunk and floor pan repair kits, body filler and much more. Call  (410) 822-2122 or (800) 426-2261 to order your Por-15 products today. Free catalogs with every order over $20.00.

Important technical info for lift rule classes.

We have had some problems with customers not being able to get enough rpms from low lift profiles. This is usually due to not checking open spring pressure. The spring specs may state a sufficient pressure but it is usually for a much higher valve lift. Be sure to check your actual installed spring pressure at both open and closed checking heights that apply to YOUR heads and camshaft. The open pressure is the most important. On low lift applications it may be necessary to shim the springs to 20 or 30 lbs over the recommended seat pressure to get the right open pressure. Failure to do this may result in valve float and engine damage. DO NOT USE Z-28 SPRINGS! They will have a very short life and not enough pressure. We recommend H-11 tool steel springs, which cost about $150.00 per set. They are cheaper in the long run, especially if they prevent an engine failure. Some of the stock diameter valve springs for .550-.600 lift will work but they will still have a shorter life than the H-11 version. Remember these are race profiles and have quite radical valve motion. Good spring maintenance is critical.
